Tour Summary

Amaco Small Group Tours invites you to join us as we explore New Zealand’s South Island on the specially tailored 12-day itinerary departing on 21 November 2022.

New Zealand’s South Island is home to some of the most remarkable natural landscapes that you’ll ever witness. From wildlife to wineries, glacial valleys to star-filled skies, the South Island offers visitors adventure and activities ranging from the mild to the wild.

While the main focus of our conference itinerary is the South Island, our starting point is actually on the North Island – albeit in Wellington which is located at the very southern end.

This city was recently named the “coolest little capital in the world” by Lonely Planet and is a compact yet spectacularly scenic city that encompasses a waterfront promenade, sandy beaches, a working harbour and colourful timber houses on the surrounding hills.

While in Wellington you’ll enjoy a private tour of Te Papa Museum and hear stories and gain insights into Maori culture. From historic, artistic and contemporary perspectives, this tour will help you better understand what makes New Zealand Maori culture so unique. Your time in Wellington will also include a Foodie Tour during which you’ll learn why the city is regarded as New Zealand’s culinary capital. You’ll be introduced to local tastes, products and people.

The Interisland Ferry will take you across Cook Straight – the body of water that separates the North and South Islands of New Zealand – and it’s then onto Blenheim which is situated in the heart of the wine-growing Marlborough region. An idyllic, unspoilt playground it is home to dozens of secluded bays, pristine beaches and blue inlets. This is also New Zealand’s most successful grape-growing region, producing many internationally recognised and awarded wines.

From Blenheim you’ll journey south to Kaikoura, for a Whale Watching Cruise. This is one of the few places on the planet where Giant Sperm Whales are present year-round. You may also encounter New Zealand Fur Seals and pods of Dusky Dolphins. Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales and Southern Right Whales are also visible depending upon the season.

The Coastal Pacific Train takes you breathtakingly close to the Pacific Ocean, where the roaring sea meets enormous bush-clad mountains. We’ve timed our departure specifically to pass through the idyllic Canterbury Plains as the sun sets, bringing you into Christchurch just after it drops beyond the horizon.

Known as the “Garden City”, Christchurch is the largest centre in the South Island. The tree-lined River Avon meanders through its heart and the neo-gothic Christchurch Cathedral presides over “The Square”, retaining something of the essentially English nature of its origins. While in Christchurch you’ll have the chance to enjoy a leisurely glide along the tranquil Avon River, wander the beautiful botanic gardens and participate in a fascinating “Quake City” tour with a specialist local guide.

Your South Island journey continues with the drive from Christchurch to Mount Cook, via Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki on what is probably one of New Zealand’s most scenic drives. Lake Tekapo, in the Mackenzie Basin, is home to a local township that faces north across the remarkable turquoise coloured lake to the mountainous drama of the Southern Alps. While there, you’ll see the Church of the Good Shepard and take in the scenery before continuing onto Lake Pukaki, stopping in the township of Twizel as well.

Your itinerary includes 2 nights in the heart of Aoraki Mt Cook National Park. The village of Mount Cook is a haven in one of the most unforgiving parts of New Zealand. On every side, the Southern Alps scrape the sky and the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Despite the sometimes difficult conditions, this area is an exceptionally beautiful place to visit. You don’t have to be a mountaineer to interact with the stunning scenery; there are various alpine walks and your itinerary includes a tour to the Tasman Glacier

Our final destination on this itinerary is Queenstown but not before stops in Wanaka – a picturesque ski town overlooking Lake Wanaka and then in Arrowtown, an old gold mining settlement that retains much of its early character.

For those not familiar with Queenstown, it offers something for everyone. Whether you like to indulge your inner explorer or simply relax and enjoy the finer things in life this is your town. Surrounded by towering mountains and positioned on the edge of a lake, Queenstown is the centre of South Island adventure and the perfect location from which to base the last part of the itinerary.

While in Queenstown, your Amaco itinerary includes a fly-cruise-fly experience with the highlight being one of the world’s most stunning alpine scenic flights between Queenstown and Milford Sound – which was famously described by Rudyard Kipling as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’. Along the way, you will be able to enjoy spectacular views of the snow-capped Southern Alps, lakes and of course the world-famous Milford Sound.

Once landed, you’ll witness the awe-inspiring scenery close up, sailing New Zealand’s southern fjords amid towering cliffs, viewing sparkling waterfalls and watching for the wildlife onshore. You’ll return to Queenstown again by plane, enjoying views over Lake Wakatipu.

This conference sold out when offered for its original dates of February 2022. Based on the interest then, and the pent up demand for regional international travel, we’re confident that this conference will sell out.

If you are interested in joining us as we travel through New Zealand’s South Island in late November and early December 2022, please make sure to register early.

For your comfort and touring pleasure, we’ve limited the number of participants that can be a part of our conference to just 40 people. Register today or you will miss out!

Day 4 (Thur 24 Nov 2022)Blenheim

Today you’ll enjoy a full day wine and art tour of the Marlborough Region.

Marlborough is recognised as one of the premium wine regions of the world. It is New Zealand’s leading and largest wine region, producing 70% of all New Zealand’s wine.

Marlborough draws international acclaim that far outweighs its size. In the span of just a few decades winemakers have embraced this small, yet geographically diverse region, exploring the nuances offered by its landscape to craft exhilarating flavours in many different wine styles. Increasingly, the region has also attracted an eclectic cohort of artists, whose studios pepper the countryside in amongst the grapevines.

We’ve planned a day where you’ll spend your time hopping between paints and pinot! Your tour today will be hosted by a local winemaker and historian. Visit celebrated local vineyards and the private studio of artist Brian Badock, and the Shark Nett Gallery which boasts an enviable collection of Maori Art.

Your day includes a 2-course lunch at a local vineyard with paired wines.

Tonight enjoy dinner and a pint of locally brewed craft beer at Dodson Street Beer Garden and Brewery.

Day 6 (Sat 26 Nov 2022)Christchurch

Conference Session 3 & 4 will take place this morning in the Forum Room.

Upon conclusion of the sessions, you’ll enjoy lunch at Spice Paragon before departing on a half-day tour of Christchurch.

The afternoon will kick off in style as you board a handcrafted, flat-bottomed boat and embark on a leisurely glide along the tranquil Avon River, as a skilled punter in traditional Edwardian attire propels you slowly along the water. Punting on the Avon is an eco-friendly way to relax and enjoy Christchurch from a different perspective as you make your way from the historic Antigua Boat sheds, through the Botanic Gardens, and enjoy the spectacular flora that this ‘Garden City’ is famous for.

Following the boat journey, you’ll begin a fascinating 90 minutes “Quake City” tour with a specialist local guide. See all the major city sights including the Transitional Cardboard Cathedral, 185 empty chair earthquake memorial, remains of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament plus the exciting new developments popping up in the inner city. The tour concludes with you being whisked into the air onboard the Christchurch Gondola. You’ll be transported nearly a kilometre to the Crater Rim of the Port Hills. Day 7 (Sun 27 Nov 2022)Christchurch to Mount Cook

This morning you’ll be transferred to Mount Cook via Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki, one of New Zealand’s most scenic drives.

Your first stop today is at Lake Tekapo in the Mackenzie Basin. The township faces north across the remarkable turquoise coloured lake to the mountainous drama of the Southern Alps.

Lake Tekapo gets its intense milky-turquoise colour from the fine rock-flour (ground by glaciers) which is suspended in the water. You’ll see the Church of the Good Shepard and take in the scenery before continuing onto Lake Pukaki, stopping in the township of Twizel for lunch at a local restaurant.

Once done with lunch, the transfer continues into the heart of Aoraki Mt Cook National Park and your accommodation for the next two nights.

Tonight you dine in the Panorama Room, under a purpose-built glass canopy.

Overnight: Hermitage Hotel Mount Cook

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8 (Mon 28 Nov 2022)Mount Cook National Park

An amazing encounter with New Zealand’s largest glacier awaits you today. Explore and learn about the ever-changing glacial landscape as you journey across the terminal lake. Icebergs of every shape and size periodically tear away from the face of the glacier and into the rapidly growing lake, making every day different to the next.

This is a unique opportunity to truly feel small as the lateral moraines rear up almost 200m, reminding us of the scale and greatness that the glacier has reached in previous times.

Lunch will be provided and you’ll then have the afternoon free to relax or sign up for one of the other activities offered by the hotel.

Come together for dinner at the Alpine Restaurant tonight.

Following dinner, you’ll join the resident astronomy guide for a 1-hour guided journey of the night sky and all the wonders it holds. Available on a clear night, the tour begins as the darkness comes alive with the stars and gives you the opportunity to view the galaxy through high powered telescopes.

Overnight: Hermitage Hotel Mount Cook

Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9 (Tue 29 Nov 2022)Mount Cook to Queenstown

Today you’ll be transferred by private coach to Queenstown via Wanaka, where you’ll stop for lunch in this picturesque ski town overlooking Lake Wanaka.

Following lunch, you’ll continue onto Queenstown, stopping along the way in Arrowtown, an old gold mining settlement that retains much of its early character. It was the discovery of gold in Arrowtown which led miners by the thousands into the district and resulted in the formation of settlements adjacent to the gold diggings.

You then visit the Kawarau Bungy Bridge. If you’ve heard of Bungy, you’ve heard of the Kawarau. The world’s first and most infamous of leaps is still going strong, with tens of thousands of Bungy jumpers each year. If you choose to take the leap there are a number of options; topple over backwards, forwards, with another person, spin or somersault.

Next, stop at Gibbston Valley Winery, one of the pioneers of this region’s wine industry for a wine tasting. This small, sophisticated winery, is set in spectacular mountain surroundings and has earned an international reputation for Pinot Noir as well as other thriving grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Pinot Blanc. Their 2000 Reserve Pinot Noir was named the Champion Pinot Noir of the World. Here you’ll enjoy a private tour including an exclusive tasting in New Zealand’s largest Wine Cave.

A 2-course dinner with paired wines will follow after which you’ll be driven the short distance to your hotel in the heart of downtown Queenstown.

On arrival, you’ll board a spacious vessel for a tour of the sound’s awe-inspiring scenery, sailing New Zealand’s southern fjords amid towering cliffs, viewing sparkling waterfalls and watching for the wildlife onshore.

Keep a lookout for seals basking on the rocks or dolphins frolicking in the water. The scenic cruise vessel has a purpose-built observation lounge and large deck, so you can be sure you’ll get some great viewing opportunities.

Lunch is included onboard.

Travel Options & Extensions

Given everything that has happened in the travel industry of late – you’re correct to be vigilant about where you spend your travel dollar.

Amaco is not only a member of AFTA, the Australian Federation of Travel Agents but we are also ATAS Travel Accredited. This means we have met strict industry financial, operational, and management standards and criteria. Only the best industry agents achieve this accreditation meaning that you can travel with us knowing that you’re in safe and very capable hands.

With over 25 years’ experience in planning and running conferences, we understand that participants often want to add additional travel destinations and adventures either before or after the all-inclusive packages we provide.

Other operators might discourage you from doing this. Sometimes, it’s because of the added complexity it creates and at other times they’ll try to talk you out of it simply because they don’t have capable or experienced consultants with the breadth and depth of knowledge the consultants we employ have.

We encourage all participants to make the most of the time away. This might mean departing earlier than the rest of the group and visiting other destinations before meeting up with the main group at the conference or staying on at the conclusion and doing some additional travel.

Either way – our consultants are perfectly positioned to assist you with making these arrangements and will do all the hard work for you – seamlessly combining your personalised itinerary with the group program.

CAN I BOOK MY OWN FLIGHTS?

Yes… not a problem. We understand that people may have a preferred Travel Agent they want to use and we don’t have any issues with you doing so. We’ll advise you of suggested arrival and departure times to allow you to make use of our group transfers.

That said though… we do have experienced consultants who are ready and waiting to help… even if that means just giving you a comparison price – nothing wrong with some competition.

We do ask for a copy of your itinerary so that we can double-check it to ensure that it fits with our program and group itinerary.

One word of warning, however, when booking flights independently – as the non-ticketing Agent we’re not notified of any changes or cancellations to your booking. If anything changes with your booking, it will be up to your agent to contact you and then for you to contact us.

It is also worth pointing out that even though we’ll have experienced staff members escorting the group during the conference, as the non-ticketing Agent we are unable to make contact or deal with the airline on your behalf.

CAN I CHOOSE MY OWN CLASS OF TRAVEL?

We used to include flights in our travel package but found that in many cases the fares were more expensive than the best available daily fares or were not applicable for people who were looking to extend pre or post the main conference travel dates.

We also felt it was unfair on you, as a participant, to unknowingly pay a premium for a more flexible group fare when you are already committed to attending the conference.

By not including the airfare in the package, you are able to work with one of our experienced and knowledgeable Travel Consultants to arrange flights on any airline and from any destination depending on your preferences…. including the class of travel.

CAN I VISIT OTHER DESTINATIONS BEFORE OR AFTER THE CONFERENCE?

In short….. Yes!

You’re encouraged to talk to our experienced travel consultants to learn more about the options open to you either before or after the conference itineraries. We will gladly work with you to put together a personalised itinerary that can include as much or as little as you want.

We believe it is important for your own peace of mind to know that our consultants are all employed directly by Amaco Small Group Tours and are located in our office.

We don’t subcontract out the travel to a third party which means you can be comfortable knowing that whatever arrangements you make through Amaco will be tied together with the conference program to make one continuous, seamless travel itinerary. We’ll put as much care and effort into your extension as we put into the planning of the conference.

Whether it is simply booking some airport transfers with a couple of nights accommodation through to more elaborate arrangements we are perfectly positioned to incorporate any individual travel plans into your overall conference itinerary.

Email or call us so we can put together your perfect itinerary.

WHAT ABOUT TRAVEL INSURANCE?

Much has been said about the value of travel insurance – especially given the broad-based exclusion policies many underwriters have in place which protects them from claims resulting from pandemics and epidemics.

Amaco provides travel insurance from some of the most reputable companies in the industry including Cover-More and nib-SureSave – and always at competitive rates. Over the last few months, there have been a number of enhancements to the policies available which many of the credit card policies do not include.

Please call our office and we will gladly work with you to obtain a quote from any or all of our insurance suppliers.

Education

Amaco is an Accredited Education Provider for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine.

Each conference we run includes an education syllabus that assists GP’s, pharmacists and health professionals to improve the quality of care they provide to patients and customers while at the same time providing them with the opportunity to travel to and experience new and exciting destinations.

Our conference will allow delegates the opportunity to earn CPD points based on the content and time in session. As has been the case with past conferences, we will work closely with participants affiliated with other associations to ensure that they receive maximum recognition for attending the conference.

The content of the education sessions will be relevant to GPs, Medical Specialists, Pharmacists, Dentists, Nurses and other health providers. We encourage all attendees to register for the conference sessions.

The Education Committee for the New Zealand South Island Conference will be selected in the coming months with final conference topics to be chosen based on the feedback from our previous conference attendees and with input from the RACGP, ACRRM and Medical Journals. Suitable speakers will be approached based on the topics selected.

Subject to final accreditation, the New Zealand South Island Conference will include an Education Activity (formerly Category 2 Activity) affording delegates the opportunity to earn between 16 – 20 points.

ACRRM members can also expect the education program to be accredited and to earn CPD points. RACGP and ACRRM accreditation will be applied for under the triennium 2020 to 2022.

As has been the case in the past, Amaco will work with pharmacy bodies and those affiliated with other associations to ensure that they receive maximum recognition for attending the conference.

We welcome applications from potential presenters and encourage anyone interested to contact us to obtain further information.
