Lotusbird Lodge is located 480 kilometres north of Cairns, and 28 kilometres east of the Musgrave Roadhouse, on the western boundary of Lakefield National Park in central-eastern Cape York.
The lodge has 10 individual pole style cabins set amongst shady eucalypts along the inner bank of a large horseshoe-shaped billabong. Each cabin has its own private verandah overlooking the billabong and is very comfortably furnished, with an ensuite.
The lodge was named after the Jacana (Lotusbirds) that inhabit the billabong and while not a dedicated bird watchers lodge, bird watching is one of the major activities of the lodge.
The local environment ranges from open Eucalypt woodland and gallery forests to grassy plains, marshlands, creeks and lagoons, providing the ideal habitat for over 200 species of birds – wading, migratory and resident woodland and grassland birds, including several species endemic to Cape York.
Lotusbird is an owner-operated business with 21 years of experience in the Cape York tourist industry. The owners take pride in the service they offer, and guests enjoy true old-style country hospitality.
Cabins are either double or twin share and have a cane table with two chairs, a small refrigerator, wardrobe, ceiling fans, screened windows and a table and two chairs on the private verandah.
The lodge can only accommodate a maximum of 20 guests at any given time, and the restaurant and bar facilities are for lodge guests only, ensuring our guests maximum enjoyment of the tranquillity of the Australian bush.
The main lodge has a central dining area and a long verandah overlooking the lagoon. It is a wonderful place to relax, do some birdwatching, look at the nature library, play a board game with a friend, or read.
Guests can enjoy fine dining from our home-style menu, packed lunches are supplied for the adventurers who wish to spend a full day exploring. The cuisine is varied, fresh and light.
