Nestled in the heart of the Karakum Desert, just a short walk from one of the planet’s most extraordinary natural spectacles – the Darvaza Gas Crater, often dubbed the “Gates of Hell” the Yurt Camp offers a rare combination of remote desert immersion, nomadic‑style lodging, and up‑close access to this fiery landmark.
Its proximity (about 200 metres from the crater rim) which means that instead of rushing to the location in darkness and returning by midnight, guests can linger, witness the crater’s glow through the night, and wake to dawn in the glowing desert.
Accommodation at the camp is housed in traditional felt and canvas yurts, each fitted with basic beds with a sleeping bag supplied. Ambient solar or battery lighting is supplied until lights out at 10pm.
Share facilities with western style toilets and some shower facilities are available in the camp.
The setting and communal areas define this experience. Dining takes place in open‑air (depending on weather) or cane‑sheltered pavilions. A traditional Turkmen meal is served (often barbecued outdoors) by our hosts before a walk to to the Darvaza Gas Crater under the desert star lit sky.
